Ford Spearheads Diesel Revolution - April 30, 2008

Ford Motor Company in its endeavor to introduce innovative technologies that improve fuel economy, reduce vehicle emissions and country’s reliance on imported oil, has finally come up with the cleanest and the quietest diesel sold in America. Its all-new Ford F-Series Super Duty pickup has a new 6.4-liter Power Stroke® Diesel that has ultra low-sulfur diesel fuel and advanced diesel particulate filter which can provide particulate emissions levels similar to that of gasoline engines. 2008 Ford F-Series Super Duty pickup is soon to be unveiled at the State Fair of Texas in Dallas on Sept. 28.

“Ford has built its truck reputation on innovation in design, capability and durability,” said Mark Fields, Ford’s president of The Americas. He further noted, “Clean diesel power will bring even more capability to our new Super Duty pickup – along with a new level of quietness and refinement. It’s what you would expect from America’s truck leader for nearly 30 years, and it’s the sort of innovation you will see throughout our product lineup going forward.”

Ford F-Series Pickup parts have included the all new Power Stroke diesel engine to increase the current displacement of Duper Duty pickup. This engine is the very first engine in North America to utilize a high pressure, high precision, common-rail fuel injection system featuring piezo-electric injectors which pave way for a quieter engine with better emissions. The filter incorporated in it is efficient in sifting black smoke from exhaust gases. In the process, it also cleans itself through the use of advanced engine controls.

It can be recalled that Ford has also spearheaded other environment advocacies earlier. These include vehicles that can run on E-85 ethanol, including the flex-fuel F-150, and hybrids. It is also looked up as the leader in hydrogen internal combustion engines. In view of this advocacy, Ford is also actively engaged in fuel, engine and transmission studies to deploy advanced technologies without sacrificing the environment.

How The Jeep Got Its Name -

Where did the name Jeep come from? Not from the original designer and builder, the Bantam Car Company. It wasn’t Willys, the famous manufacturer of the Willys MB, either. Ford didn’t pick the name when it was making the GPW, and the U.S. Military never designated the term either. Truth be told, no one knows for sure just how the name “Jeep” came about, but the one common thread is that all of the theories relate to a sort of general population adoption of the term.

There are a number of theories on the origination of the name. There are reports that the term “Jeep” was used in Oklahoma in the 1930’s to describe specialized trucks used in drilling for oil, and that was how the term was later used by those from the area in describing the Willys MB.

Others believe that the name came from a slang abbreviation of the term G.P., which was an acronym that stood for General Purpose vehicle. The trouble with this theory is that the term General Purpose was reportedly used to describe the US Army’s quarter-ton reconnaissance vehicles, and not the Willys. Further, the Willys MB was designated for specific duties and was not referred to in Army circles as a General Purpose vehicle.

Along similar lines goes the theory that the name was a one-vowel slang word replacement for Ford’s description of the vehicle (the Ford GPW now commonly referred to as the Willys GPW), which referred to it as GP. The G stood for government use and the P referred to its wheel base size of 80 inches. When Ford began making these vehicles some people may have found it difficult to call it a Willys since it was actually manufactured by Ford.

Another explanation of the name has it that it was based on a character from the Popeye comic strip in the 1930’s that was known as Eugene the Jeep. This little guy was from another dimension and was blessed with the ability to go anywhere and do anything. He went through walls, scaled huge trees, flew, disappeared, etc. There wasn’t anywhere Eugene the Jeep couldn’t go. The theory goes that US soldiers were so impressed by the Willys go-anywhere performance that they began calling it Jeep after the character.

We’ll probably never know the answer to how the name Jeep began, but maybe that’s a good thing as it adds to the mystical allure of this American icon. What we do know for sure is that over 70 years later the Jeep, not to mention quite a few Willys, is still going strong!

The Saturn VUE Hybrid: The Price Is Right -

The hybrid fad is anything but a fad. Ever since Honda and Toyota introduced their respective gas-electric models several years ago, competing automakers have been playing catch up. Indeed, General Motors – ravaged by financial woes and negative press coverage – has been doing its best to jump into the fray nearly a full year after archrival Ford Motor Company introduced its first hybrid the Ford Escape. This summer the 2007 Saturn VUE Green Line goes on sale, an SUV that is priced just right. Please keep reading to learn what sets this new model apart from the rest.

Buying a hybrid vehicle can look like the right decision at first glance. Higher fuel mileage, lowered gas consumption, and a vehicle that is much more environmentally friendly are some of a hybrid’s chief attributes. However, most hybrids have carried a hefty price premium compared to their gasoline powered brethren. Even with soon-to-expire government tax credits figured in, most hybrids cost thousands of dollars more than the average gas-powered vehicle.

For 2007, the Saturn VUE Green Line edition will change all of that.

Yes, if you are in the market for a hybrid SUV, you do have some choices. The Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, and Ford Escape each offer hybrid models. For 2007, Saturn’s SUV the VUE will have a hybrid model in the mix too. Here are some of the features that will set the VUE apart from the competition:

An Attractive Price – With an MSRP of $22,995, the VUE Green Line will be priced at about $4000 less than the competition. Although still several thousand dollars higher than the basic gasoline VUE, the retail price of Saturn’s hybrid VUE is something to be reckoned with.

Best Highway Mileage – Unlike some hybrids that get better fuel mileage around town, the VUE Green Line will show a dramatic improvement in highway fuel economy: projected figures are 27 mpg city; 32 mpg highway. GM says that fuel mileage improvements will come through electric powered acceleration assist, early fuel cut off during deceleration, and engine cut-off while idling.

The VUE Green Line will be powered by a 2.4L engine producing 170 horsepower. This compares to the base 2.2L gasoline engine available with other VUEs that produce 143 horsepower. In addition, standard equipment upgrades for the VUE Green Line will include 16 inch alloy wheels, antilock brakes with traction control, bright side molding with rear spoiler, and more. Finally, OnStar will be included and the usual power convenience packages will also be options.

The Saturn VUE Green Line will be joined by the Saturn AURA Green Line in 2007. This Opel-derived sedan will debut in the fall as a gasoline model, months before the hybrid version is ready. Expect sales of both models to be strong as long as high gasoline prices remain in place as expected by some.
