Increasing Engine Horsepower - April 30, 2009

There are several ways of increasing Engine Horsepower.
Weight
The first thing you can do is to reduce as much weight from the vehicle as possible.
• Don’t keep anything in the boot
• Change your metal bonnet to a carbon fibre one
• Use Alloy Rims which are far lighter than the standard metal ones

Exhaust System
The next step that should be taken to increase Engine Horsepower is to upgrade the Exhaust System
• Removing the Catalytic converter and straight piping the exhaust will increase Horsepower
• For extra horsepower above 6000 Rpm you can add an aftermarket header that will increase it by about 3-4 peak HP
• A Cat Back upgrade should be done first to get the full benefit of this modification.

Air Filter
Another way to increase Horsepower is to fit a High Performance air filter which will allow the air to enter more easily which will in turn reduce the air resistance on the intake stroke and therefore not take any power from the engine.

Using a Polished Intake Manifold will also reduce the resistance even further as well as using bigger Air Filters and using less intake piping to give it a more direct flow.

ECU
You can also reprogram the ECU by adding a chip that some people claim has improved the HP of their vehicles.

Flowmeter
By replacing the Flowmeter in the intake tract you will remove the bottleneck as it is very restrictive and reduces Horsepower.
By performing this modification you will increase peak HP by about 5.

Shaving Cylinder Head
Shaving the cylinder head increases compression which in turn increases Horsepower because it makes the fuel more combustible.
Note: Please be advised to check for your maximum cylinder head shaving limit with your vehicles workshop manual.

Increase Displacement
Increasing displacement gives the engine more power as it allows it to burn more fuel with each revolution and this can be done by the cylinder size.

Changing under drive Pullies
This modification consists of changing Crankshaft and Alternator pullies to reduce accessory drag and can increase Engine Horsepower by about 15.

Mobile Car Wash Complaints -

Everyone knows that car washes often steal things out of customer’s cars. Actually it is not the car wash owner or the company, but rather the low end ethical lacking employee, looking to make some money on the side by stealing. Yet in mobile car washing generally the owner or crew chief is right there the whole time and most customers are regular customers and thus there is not the issue of theft. Yet so many start-up mobile car wash entrepreneurs ask; How do you deal with a client complaints or insinuation of damage by your employee?

The correct answer is that this rarely happens. If or when it does it is usually with only first time or brand new customers. They might not understand mobile car washes are not like a full service fixed site carwash. Mobile car washes have no reason to steal, as they make a lot of money servicing customers weekly. Even basic services of $10 times 52 weeks per year is $520.00 without any detailing or waxing or add on services. Let’s face it there is nothing in someone’s car worth losing that kind of money or the ten people they might tell if one did do such a thing. 10 X $520 = $5,200.00. No way.

Even the crew chief or driver of the mobile car wash who maybe up to 12% commission knows this, as 12% of $5,200.00 is $624.00 out of their pay, plus he could lose his job. You see? At carwashes a car wash employee makes what $8.00 an hour max? If he steals something or steals quarters out of an ashtray, then he keeps it and could care less about the customers or his job for that matter, he can get a new job easily. And most car washes say they are not responsible for lost or stolen items as a disclaimer.

At fixed site Car washes the customers, well only about 15% are regular customers, yet for a mobile car wash business their customer base is not less than 85% repeat and generally over 90% you see. Once this is explained to the customer they simmer down. If a customer tells us they will call the BBB, we tell them to find another service to wash their cars, which has such low prices and great quality, timely service and professionalism. This maybe your best option if you own a mobile car wash. In actuality you might wish to realize that your customers do not use the BBB and they are regulars and tell their friends. Mobile Car Washes survive on reputation, regular service and quality, not ridiculous, spotty and worthless referrals from the BBB.

If a customer is a troublemaker, well there are in Los Angeles for instance 2.2 cars per person and 16.5 million people, not so concerned about accusations really. You do not need those types of customers, you want steady, repeat customers, whose checks do not bounce, whose credit cards are good and who refer customers. You do not want sniveling wackos or Prozac drugy weirdoes. Let Hollywood deal with them, something to think on.

Tips for RV Trips -

It’s always a pleasant adventure to drive down in your RV across the open roads and enjoy the natural beauty to your hearts content. RVs have become an indispensable item for people who love to embark on long journeys to the wildernesses and great outdoors. Indeed it is much better than the boring journeys in your cold old car – its so much fun to enjoy the comforts of home while traveling across scenic locations fro your dream vacation. However, one of the major challenges that are faced by all RV owners is to drive safely and successfully on open roads.

Just because of its sheer size it is often more difficult to drive a recreational vehicle compared to a car or even a truck. Particularly, when you are on the highway, it is important that your motorhome blends in well with the smaller cars that are much more agile and your car doesn’t really block the road and create trouble for other drivers on the road. When you are driving recreational vehicle it is important that you are well aware of the road and traffic rules. There are various points that you need to be particularly careful about when you are on the streets in your RV.

Be Patient: Always keep in mind the size of your recreational vehicle, it is not your small car that you can blaze through the road. While on your recreational vehicle it is important to be patient and drive slow. Recreational vehicles are just not the type to drive aggressively at a high speed. Its just like you are adding wheels to your home and driving it along, so you need to give due consideration to its bulk and keep the speed in control. For those drivers who are a bit impatient it is often difficult to adjust to this slow moving giants but for a safe travel it is important that you adjust your mindset. Try to keep your speed below 10 miles per hour. 10 miles per hour would be relatively good speed for a RV that would keep things under control yet cover enough ground in short span.

Plan and Create Your Road Map: If you can plan your road map well that would probably save you more than half the trouble with your RV. Try to avoid interstates and highways that are particularly known for high-speed traffic. Also, it is very helpful, if you can plan your tour to avoid driving through busy cities during rush hours. Try to avoid the more commonly used routes and find alternative routes that has relatively less traffic and often offer better natural view. However, it is also important that while deciding on these alternative routes, you have complete information about these routes so that you don’t get stuck at some point due to narrow or bad road conditions.

Never drive in bad weather: Bad weather conditions put up a challenge for all drivers irrespective of the type of vehicle they are driving and the challenge is even greater if you are driving a RV. rv-n-motorhomes.com Motor homes and recreational vehicles generally do not take to bad weathers and are particularly difficult top drive during high strong winds. It is advisable to take off the roads during bad weather and drive another day once the weather has calmed down.

Avoid Slopes: Try to avoid slopes, both uphill and downhill when driving your RV. It becomes very difficult to drive up steep slopes and also to control your RV while moving downhill. Even if it requires you to travel a few extra miles off your route it is always better to do so than to take the risk of moving up or down the slope.

Towing Vehicles: Towing a vehicle is a common practice for RV owners but it makes driving an RV all the more difficult. You need to be doubly cautious when you have a towing vehicle along with your motor home. It is advisable to detach towing vehicle when you need to backup your RV. Unhook the towing vehicle and park it safely, then ask someone to guide you, when you back up the RV.

Campground Reservations: Always try to make your campground reservations in advance. Use the campground directories to locate and plan the campgrounds that you would use for your overnight stays. If you are going to stay at a campground where you have never stayed before, it is also wise to do your reservation for just one night to ensure that the campground meets your requirements than to do a longer reservation for cost cutting.

RV trips are meant for enjoyment and pleasure. Following these basic guidelines would definitely be helpful to ensure road safety and better organize your RV trip for hassle free enjoyment.
